Peter Dijk is born and raised in Groningen, a culturally rich city in the north of the Netherlands. As a young boy he dreamed away over the paintings by regional artists such as Dijkstra and Alting from the art movement De Ploeg who transformed the dull agricultural lands around his city into colorful expressionist landscapes. Dijk studied in Groningen at the Academie Minerva between 1967 and 1972. The academy in this period was on the verge of shifting from a traditional approach to a more conceptual. This traditional background provides him with a broad skill of techniques in painting, printing and sculpting. He encounters the works of his great examples Mondriaan, Giacometti, Malevich, Twombly, Beckman, Rauschenberg and Richter who continue to inspire him during his career. The work of pop-artists have a strong influence on his early work which result in an extensive production of screen-prints such as the series ‘Mockelmossen’ and ‘Waaiers’.
